A holiday letter is written to obtain permission for absence from work for a specified period based on certain commitments shortly. Since most holidays are planned except in emergencies, a holiday letter is mostly written in anticipation of leaving. The applicant is expected to handover his/her duties to another coworker and completes his/her tasks or as required by the organization.
Since the holiday letter is written to the employer, it should be written formally. It should contain proper details of the duration of the holiday, who you are handing over the work to while on leave, date of joining back and how to contact you in case of an emergency. Complete the work assigned to you before asking for leave as it shows professionalism. Nothing other than necessary details should be mentioned. Show respect towards the receiver of the letter. Be genuine in the tone of your letter. If you don’t know how to get started, feel free to use the tips and samples below to get a move on.

Subject: Holiday Permission
Dear Mr. George,
I am writing this letter to ask your permission to avail holidays for four weeks from 06 April to 03 May 2013 since I have finally obtained sponsorship for my advent of Mount Kilimanjaro in the Himalayas after two years.
Although my name has been included in the eleventh hour and has little time for gearing up physically and mentally, I do not want to miss this lifetime opportunity.
I have no important work commitment during the said period. However, I will complete all assigned tasks before departure and brief my colleague Stalin about my duties and responsibilities so that he can handle my work until my return.
Since I will be inaccessible over the phone during the climb, I will call as and when possible to clarify queries if any. I will return to work on 04 May 2013.
I request you to approve my holidays and oblige.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Yours Sincerely,
Martha Roberts.
