An advice letter is a letter requested or received from a mentor or guide. It is written when the sender requires some clarity on dealing with a particular situation or problem and thinks about approaching a senior colleague, confidant, friend, employee, student or family member. An advice letter, when asked for, must include all the necessary details about the problem that the sender is facing. The receiver must not be left confused with the lack of information in the letter.
The advice letter is usually confidential, meaning its contents are to be accessed only by the receiver. Some matter mentioned in the advice letter might be private, and therefore the privacy of all those concerned must be respected. Also, if the letter is formal and is inquiring about technical help or professional assistance, the letter should be courteous and polite. The person advising must also strive to give a concise yet a clear-cut opinion or advice that is being asked of him/her.
Tips On Writing An Advice Letter
- The Letter must be very clear about the information being requested.
- The sender of the letter must choose the right person to ask for advice; someone who has expertise in that subject.
- The advice which is being given must be clear and to the point.
- Confidentiality must be maintained if the letter refers to private matters.

Subject: Advice for Avoiding Relocation for a New Job
Dear _____(Sir or Madam),
I hope this letter finds you and your family in the best of health and spirits. It has been really a long time since we met up and chatted about our school and college days.
I received your letter the other day telling me about the new job offer that you have got. At the face of it, the offer looks tempting, both financially and profile-wise. It will also be a great jump even designation-wise for you from the job you are in today. But if you want to bring forth your personal life, I would advise that you stay on with your current job a little longer.
I have reasons for saying this, and they are:
- Your children are well settled in the best school in town
- The kids are at a very crucial age regarding their schooling
- You have a beautiful company accommodation in one of the best colonies here
- Your wife also has a good job wherein she is comfortably able to strike a balance between work and home
- Relocation would mean to give up all these comforts, leave alone the fact that your friend circle too will go through a change.
I would advise that you stay on here a little longer, let the kids finish their schooling and settle in the course of their choice and then you can move once they go to college by themselves.
Having said that, if you still decide to take on the new job, I am always there to support you.
Take care and keep me posted with your decision.
Love
Yours truly,

Dear Dr. Ronson
Subject: Advice Letter.
I write to you at a very exciting time in our country. The national government has recently established an institution that provides skills to unskilled workers, with an intention of increasing labor productivity. I have been considering about applying for a job opportunity in this institution, where I will be a designated trainer.
Since you have over 25 years of experience in this field, I thought you would be the best person to clarify my doubts. Although this is a great opportunity, I have had my reservations. I am skeptical of joining an organization that is still in its nascent stage. I am not sure whether I must leave my current job to take up this particular opportunity, or whether I must hope for the best and plunge right into it.
Your advice will be of great help. I kindly request you to assist me in taking this important decision.
Thank you.
Best Wishes
Mark Johnson

Dear Dr Ronson,
I come to you seeking advice on a personal matter because you have known me since sixth grade and I have always admired your life experiences and knowledge of academia. I also trust that you will honor my request for confidentiality.
What would you do if you had to decide between applying for government financial aid to complete a graduate degree or working full time for six months to earn enough money and have less debt?
I have recently borrowed to purchase an automobile and insurance liability coverage. The monthly payments are low and manageable with my part-time job, but I need money now to cover tuition costs. While I am reluctant to borrow more money, I worry that I may choose not to return to school if I take six months off.
Please let me know your thoughts on this subject. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for letting me express my concerns to you.
Thank you,
Regards,
Mark Johnson
